2013 loopt ten einde, tijd om terug te kijken op afgelopen jaar. Muzikaal gezien was 2013 een topjaar, met veel fijne releases maar zonder échte mega-uitschieter-favoriet. In plaats daarvan had ik meerdere favorieten, die erg van elkaar verschilden. In mijn top10 vind je roots/ americana (een genre dat ik dit jaar veel geluisterd heb), pop, rock en folk.

1. Phosphorescent – Muchacho
Tja, ik kan wel weer de loftrompet afsteken over het magistrale Song for Zula, maar ik wil ook zeker de rest van het album in het zonnetje zetten. Want Muchacho klópt gewoon. The Quotidian Beast, sleuteltrack Muchacho’s Tune, Terror in the Canyons, A New Anhedonia... stuk voor stuk ijzersterke tracks. Ik heb sinds een tijdje de deluxe versie op cd, met daarbij een schitterende live-registratie. Wat dan komen de nummers pas écht tot hun recht: door de minimale begeleiding kun je nog meer aandacht geven aan de mooie teksten die recht uit het hart van Matthew Houck komen.

2. Queens of the Stone Age - ... Like Clockwork
Met ...Like Clockwork kwam QOTSA ijzersterk terug na een lange periode wachten (en na het behoorlijk teleurstellende Era Vulgaris). Misschien ragt het niet zo als Songs for the Deaf, maar er is een heleboel emotie voor in de plaats gekomen. Josh Homme zingt beter dan ooit, en hoewel sommige tracks na verloop van tijd wat glans hebben verloren (Keep Your Eyes Peeled, Kalopsia en My God is the Sun) heeft dit album een aantal instant-QOTSA-klassiekers opgeleverd. Denk hierbij aan het subtiele titelnummer en het briljant opgebouwde I Appear Missing. En in de categorie “supersexy” heeft Smooth Sailing een plekje in mijn hart veroverd ;)

3. Portugal. The Man – Evil Friends
Iedere zomer verdient een soundtrack en naast de zomerhitjes (Blurred Lines, Wake Me Up) heb ik ook menig kilometer gereden terwijl Evil Friends uit de luidspreker knalde. Maar het bleef niet bij de zomer; ook in de weken, maanden erna bleef ik dit album luisteren.. het is gewoon ongelooflijk goed en catchy. Dat laatste is misschien even wennen voor de die-hard PTM liefhebber, je moet nu wat harder zoeken naar het psychedelische randje. Maar de nummers zitten zó goed in elkaar dat je het de band vergeeft. Ik snap alleen nog steeds niet dat een nummer als Modern Jesus of Evil Friends geen enorme radiohit is geworden…

4. Gregory Alan Isakov – The Weatherman
Soms heb je van die albums die meteen als een warme deken over je heen vallen bij de eerste luisterbeurt. The Weatherman is één van die albums. Heerlijk zwierig, met de prachtige stem van Gregory Alan Isakov. Ik heb echt een zwak voor de ‘tingeltangels’ op dit album, dansende piano, walsende violen.. het heeft het allemaal. De ideale avondplaat om bij te ontspannen na een drukke dag. Gregory zingt al je zorgen weg.

5. Foals – Holy Fire
Met Holy Fire heeft Foals een heerlijk knallende plaat gemaakt vol nuances, wat ervoor heeft gezorgd dat het nu nog zo goed bevalt dat een plek in de top5 gerechtvaardigd is. Ik heb dit jaar vele malen op deze plaat staan dansen, een heerlijke manier om wat frustraties kwijt te kunnen ;) En het zijn stuk voor stuk heerlijk sfeervolle nummers.

6. Keaton Henson – Birthdays
Keaton laat je huilen zoals je nog nooit eerder gehuild hebt. Zijn stem zal misschien niet iedereen kunnen bekoren, maar de teksten zijn wondermooi. Schoonheid die pijn doet.

7. Alela Diane – About Farewell
Haar vorige album vond ik ietwat tegenvallen maar met About Farewell is Alela Diane weer helemaal terug. Mooie folky liedjes, prachtige teksten en haar zachte, lieve stem. Maakt het leven een stuk minder hard en grauw.

8. Sigur Rós - Kveikur
De eerste plaat zonder Kjartan is er eentje waar ik aan heb moeten wennen. Maar deze weg bevalt me uiteindelijk toch ook wel, het is allemaal wat donkerder maar de nieuwe rol van drummer Orri vind ik een positieve ontwikkeling. Er staan wat mindere nummers op maar de rest is toch gewoon érg goed. Live ook echt een beleving!
TOP TRACKS: HRAFNTINNA, KVEIKUR
9. Tunng – Turbines
Bij eerdere Tunng-albums ontbrak het nog wel eens aan consistentie, maar bij Turbines klopt het allemaal. Een heerlijk folk-pop-plaatje dat een echt geheel is. Er ontbreekt wel een 'hit' als Bullets of Hustle, maar dat heb ik ze vergeven.

10. Israel Nash Gripka – Israel Nash’s Rain Plans
Over groeiplaten gesproken: het heeft een hele tijd geduurd voordat ik van de lichte teleurstelling bekomen was. Ik miste de 'knallers' van Barn Doors (zoals Red Dress en Fools Gold) maar uiteindelijk heeft deze plaat (nipt) een plekje weten te bemachtigen in de top10.

Summer tunes
It's been terribly quiet on my blog... time for an update! I've been listening to some summer hits the past few weeks and I can't decide which one gets the title "THE hit of summer 2013". I've been driving around quite a lot (1300km through Ireland, awesome) and these songs made the trip even more special.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club = the most awesome live band around. Seriously. I saw them live for the sixth time last night and after having to miss the Paradiso show in February due to a broken ankle, I was more than excited. And it was amazing! Robert is still one sexy cool fella, Leah must be the best female drummer ever and Peter has such a beautiful voice... I had a blast! They played a nice mix of old classics (Stop! Spread Your Love! Weight of the World!) and new favourites (Sell it! Returning! Lullaby!) but unfortunately, the crowd was kinda crappy - as happens more and more these days :(

Mixtape Monday (4): Holiday
I haven't had a lot of inspiration the past few weeks: I was busy finishing work and living my life (went to see Blur last Friday, OMG!, might write a bit about that later). The lovely weather inspired me to make this holiday/ summer mixtape, I hope you like it. I took some timeless classics (Alice Cooper is my standard end-of-year-yay-no-more-kids tune and I simply love Katrina & the Waves and the Kinks) and combined them with a bunch of personal favourites (such as the Dandy Warhols and Queens of the Stone Age).

Mixtape Monday (3): X
The theme of this mixtape was suggested by my friend Adrianne, who gave me the challenge of “X”. I interpreted that X in the following ways: kiss, cross, maths, quit and ‘unknown’. Of course, the first one is easiest, there are a lot of lovesongs around but I didn’t want a sappy tape ;)

2. Jamie Lidell – Multiply - I've always liked this song, especially in summer.
3. Bright Eyes – Nothing gets crossed out - I just love this song.
4. Eagles of Death Metal – Kiss the Devil - Because I love contrasts and this is such an awesome band.
5. Gossip – Heavy Cross - What can I say. Beth Ditto is amazing.
6. Elliott Smith – Waltz #2 (XO) - One of my favourite Elliott songs.

10. White Stripes – Black Math - This was my theme song for Maths in my final year at secondary school. I just didn't get it.
11. The Hollies - Jesus was a crossmaker - I like to listen to the Elizabethtown OST when driving, this is on it.

13. Laura Marling – Cross Your Fingers - Another lovely contrast ;) Cute song.
14. Guillemots – Last Kiss - I think this is one of the few decent songs on their second album Red.
15. Horse Feathers – Elergy for Quitters - Beautiful little piece of music to close it off.

Album of the Week: Portugal. The Man- Evil Friends
I had to travel more than usual the past week, so I had plenty of time to check out some new records while driving. Combined with the sunny weather and the new Portugal. The Man, those trips weren’t that bad at all.
Portugal. The Man is a band from Portland, Oregon but has its roots in Alaska. They are quite productive: 8 releases since 2003. You might think: do they put quantity over quality? Well, they’ve managed to keep the quality on quite a high level as well! Not all albums are equally great, but there’s a certain consistency in PTM’s work.
Their newest effort, Evil Friends, was produced by Danger Mouse and this can be heard in the poppyness of the album. Portugal. The Man has never sounded so radio-friendly, a lot of their other works are weird and psychedelic. But the good thing about Evil Friends is that it unmistakably has the PTM sound. You just wish they’d play tunes like Creep in a t-shirt, Modern Jesus and Atomic Man on your local radio station instead of all those generic pop songs. The aforementioned songs are super catchy and easy to sing along with. Warning: they might get stuck in your head..
It’s not that I’m evil... I just don’t like to pretend I could ever be your friend.
Lines like these (with some small alterations) are the lyrical core of both Creep in a t-shirt and Evil Friends, which makes the songs flow nicely. The entire album has a lovely summer-vibe, and some songs (especially Atomic Man) have a slight Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- sauce over them (it must be the guitars and John Gourley’s vocals). Modern Jesus is quite different from what PTM has done in the past, and is one of the standout tracks on the album. It’s laidback, catchy and instantly makes you happy when singing “the only faith we have is faith in us”. The entire album has quite a lot of quirky oneliners, which suit the uplifting music quite nicely.
It is the first half of the album that stands out, but that doesn’t give the other songs enough credit. Evil Friends is a 9 out of 10 album: only Holler Roller (Hallelujah) is a bit off. It's a good thing it's followed up by the amazing Someday Believers (that choir! that piano!) and Purple Yellow Red and Blue which is just wonderfully weird.
I just hope Portugal. The Man will get some more recognition and airplay, because they sure as hell deserve it! Maybe Evil Friends is their ticket to a bigger audience.. it’s already my Summer ’13 soundtrack.

Mixtape Monday (2): lyrics
I’m a sucker for lyrics. I like listening to them, looking them up and I always want to know what someone's singing. This mixtape has a lot of "sad" songs, whenever I feel sad it's just good to know other people are worse ;)
It was hard to pick 15 songs, because there are so many good lyrics around. (And I've probably forgotten a lot of "classics"...)
1. Leonard Cohen – Avalanche “I stepped into an avalanche and it covered up my soul” --> gets me every time I hear it. Damn. Mr. Cohen is godlike.
2. Patrick Wolf - The Tinderbox “dark to one spark and I have your heart”. I love the fact it is about one of my favourite fairy tales :)
3. The Mountain Goats – Never Quite Free “It's so good to learn that from right here the view goes on forever/ And you'll never want for comfort, and you'll never be alone”. This song gives me hope.
4. M. Ward – Poor Boy, Minor Key. Just love the line “one day they’ll be as giants/ stronger than the sun/ but that day ain’t yet come”.
5. Neutral Milk Hotel – In the aeroplane over the sea. “how strange it is to be anything at all”. Jeff Mangum writes amazing lyrics. Fact. Listen to the entire album, it’s soooo good.
6. The Low Anthem – The Ballad of the Broken Bones “So my friends if you're worried / Don't worry about me /The grasses are green here /The winters are mild/ And the hunger is passing /It's just a sensation/ And over the world am I”(Reminds me of the movie Into The Wild)
7. Andrew Bird – Armchairs. One of the most cryptic songwriters I know, and I love the fact his lyrics can be interpreted in many ways. This song makes me tear up every time, and the image of “a cosmonaut of the space between our chairs” is just amazing.
8. Johnny Flynn – The Wrote and the Writ. Mr. Flynn is a true troubadour, a storyteller. This is his masterpiece!
9. The Tallest Man on Earth – The Gardener. Cool song about a guy who kills the new love of his girl and buries him in his garden ;) “Death will grow my jasmine”
10. Of Montreal – The Past is a Grotesque Animal “in its eyes you see/ how completely wrong you can be”. I once heard a live version of this song, it’s got a lot of lyrics but it just grabs you.
11. Mark Lanegan – Bombed. A perfect love song, in just 1:08. Marvellous.
12. Bowerbirds – the Ticonderoga. “Dreaming on my pillow – of high tide”. That’s been my motto for quite a while.
13. Megafaun – The Longest Day. Banjo FTW, but the lyrics are even more win. Perfect song for when you miss someone dearly.
14. Phosphorescent – Wolves. Another example of lyrics that can be interpreted in many ways. I like to think of a person who’s in trouble (mentally) and turns to someone (his mother, because that’s what we all do, don’t we?) for help. Mom knows best.
15. Bright Eyes – Let’s Not Shit Ourselves (To Loved and to be loved). Truly amazing (and political) song, from 2002 – when Conor Oberst still wrote decent songs ;) Don’t care much for his recent material.

Mixtape Monday (1): covers
I enjoy making mixtapes, but haven't done many in the past few years. I used to be active on a forum where we made anonymous mixtapes for each other and wrote reviews. Each round had its theme, and I found it a good opportunity to (re)discover my music library and find the perfect songs to match the taste of my 'victim'.
A couple of days ago I found one of those mixtapes (in the beginning we sent them through post, how DIY!) and I said to myself: there has to be a way to revive this on my blog! Of course, there are no "victims" in this case and making it anonymous would be hard (I don't want to do anything illegal by uploading a bunch of songs, at least I won't take any risks). So I decided to give myself a theme (feel free to give me suggestions!) and make a nice mix of songs. It's, of course, all my taste but I've really tried to include lesser-known bands.
The first theme I gave myself is "covers", since I was listening to a bunch of them when I came up with the idea of "Mixtape Monday" (I'm a sucker for alliteration, please forgive me...). I like covers that are completely different from the original, and I must admit that sometimes, I don't even know (or appreciate) the original ;)

Of course, there are no "victims" in this case and making it anonymous would be hard (I don't want to do anything illegal by uploading a bunch of songs, at least I won't take any risks). So I decided to give myself a theme (feel free to give me suggestions!) and make a nice mix of songs. It's, of course, all my taste but I've really tried to include lesser-known bands.
The first theme I gave myself is "covers", since I was listening to a bunch of them when I came up with the idea of "Mixtape Monday" (I'm a sucker for alliteration, please forgive me...). I like covers that are completely different from the original, and I must admit that sometimes, I don't even know (or appreciate) the original ;)
The 'rules': a maximum of 15 songs, only 1 song per artist and it has to be on Spotify. Without further ado, here it is!

Record Store Day 2013
I consider myself a music freak and each year I keep an eager eye on the official Record Store Day website, to see what this year will bring. I’m a sucker for coloured vinyl and special editions, so I have to be careful that a day like this won’t drain my bank account. This year I came prepared: I have been tutoring for quite a while now, and I saved (most of) it for all these lovely records. This year’s list wasn’t as spectacular as those in the past, but I still found some gems I’d really like to add to my collection. So, this morning I got out of bed really early and I drove my bicycle to Nijmegen (I grabbed the opportunity to work on my fitness a bit as well). When I arrived at the record store I found out they had opened early (I have no idea why I missed that info, they spammed their fb page with all these instore gigs but no mention of a change in opening times – correct me if I’m wrong). I must admit I was rather disappointed: the Grizzly Bear and Sigur Rós records were already gone. Even the other record store in the city couldn’t help me. Fortunately, I have a nice “network” of awesome people who enjoy music as much as I do. With a little help from my friends (pun intended) I got my vinyl after all! I can’t wait to get them in my hands, I heard that the Sigur Rós record is in bright blue and green transparent vinyl... fabulous!

Oooooooooh-reo... YUM!
(Warning: if you're on a diet, please stop reading this)
I love baking, but I never seem to have enough time. My baking extravaganzas always happen during holiday- and birthday time, I really should do it more often. This recipe is one of my favourites, it combines Oreo with a scrumptious, divine cream cheese-chocolate topping. (Tip: plan some bad-ass workout after this, because it's impossible not to eat from the frosting while you're working!)
The recipe is for 18 to 20 cupcakes, but I always end up with more ;)
1. Pre-heat the oven: 180 degrees Celsius
2. Mix flower (250 grams) with 2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of salt in a bowl.
3. Take a hand mixer to get the butter (125 grams) and sugar (200 grams) fluffy and light in approx. 5 minutes. While you're doing this, add 2 eggs and one teaspoon of vanilla essence. Also put in the dry ingredients and 1,75 decilitres of low-fat cream.
4. Crush Oreos (150 grams, keep some apart for later) and fold it through the batter.
5. Fill paper cases with batter (two-third) and bake them for 20 to 25 minutes. Check if the middle is dry by using a long pin or something like that. Take the cupcakes out of the oven and let them cool off.
6. Melt 175 grams of white chocolate au bain marie, this will take a couple of minutes. It should be lukewarm and creamy.
7. Take 180 grams of good quality cream cheese and mix it with 185 grams of butter until it's nice and soft. Add the chocolate and keep on mixing. Use the frosting right away, it will get stiff before you know it.
8. Put crumbs or bits of Oreo on the frosting and enjoy!

[review] Keaton Henson - Birthdays
Schoonheid die pijn doet. Zo zou je de muziek van Keaton Henson (categorie introverte baardmans) het beste kunnen omschrijven. Deze man is gezegend met een bijzondere, hoge en uitermate breekbare stem, wat niet iedereen zal kunnen waarderen. Zijn voorgaande plaat, Dear, werd goed ontvangen en er werd dan ook door menigeen erg uitgekeken naar de opvolger Birthdays. Keaton Henson is een artiest die zijn hele hart en ziel in zijn muziek stopt – wat resulteert in pure en rauwe songs die zowel mooi en pijnlijk zijn om naar te luisteren.
Het eerste deel van de plaat is bijzonder sterk: met minimale middelen bereikt Keaton het maximale effect. Met subtiele elektrische gitaar, kabbelend en repetitief als een haardvuurtje en een sporadisch achtergrondkoortje. In 10 AM Gare Du Nord verzorgt Jesca Hoop met haar gouden stem kippenvel-bezorgende vocalen en de tekst doet de rest: “Please do not break my heart I think it’s had enough pain to last the rest of my life”
Het gaat door in de categorie ‘tranentrekker’, met het schitterende You (mede mogelijk gemaakt door de subtiele strijkers op de achtergrond). Haal de doos tissues er maar bij, als Keaton “If you must die sweetheart, die knowing that your life was my life’s best part” zingt is het moeilijk om de ogen droog te houden.
Lying to You heeft een minimale begeleiding, waardoor de (schitterende) tekst nóg meer naar de voorgrond komt. Het vertelt het verhaal van een jongeman die eigenlijk helemaal niet verliefd is op zijn vriendinnetje.

And the one thing that keeps me from falling for you,
Is I'm truly alone and I like it.
Halverwege Birthdays komt er een verandering in Hensons geluid: Don’t Swim begint misschien zoals de voorafgaande nummers, maar halverwege verandert het tempo. Het geluid word grootser; een welkome verrassing. De steviger instrumentatie zorgt voor een nieuwe dimensie in het geluid en wordt nog beter zichtbaar in Kronos. Hier laat Henson zijn ‘dark side’ zien – hij schreeuwt en laat zijn elektrische gitaar huilen en knallen.

Are you gonna let me take your soul
My god, you lead me on, I'm gonna eat you whole
Na Kronos mogen we weer even op adem komen met het prachtige Beekeeper, gevolg door het al eerder uitgebrachte Sweetheart, what have you done to us (van de gelijknamige EP). Het is niet alleen misère dat de klok slaat in de wereld van Keaton Henson, als we de tekst van In the Morning mogen geloven is er een sprankje hoop.

As a new day is dawning
Like what things for us lie ahead
And woman, I will see you in the morning
Birthdays is, hoewel de titel anders doet vermoeden, geen vrolijk plaatje geworden. Het is prachtig en tegelijkertijd pijnlijk om naar te luisteren, vanwege alle emoties die Henson in ieder liedje heeft gegoten. Eén van de beste singer-songwriter platen van dit jaar en hopelijk weet deze Britse jongeman een groot publiek te ontroeren met zijn goudeerlijke liedjes.

[review] Sixties Forever!
De jaren 60 zijn weer helemaal hip. In deze periode ontstonden verschillende muzikale stromingen en voor hedendaagse bands is het een geweldige visvijver. Vorig jaar boekte onder andere Allah- Las succes met hun psychedelische popliedjes en ook in 2013 zet de trend van jaren-60 lo-fi zich voort. Onder andere Foxygen, Unknown Mortal Orchestra en (uit ons eigen kikkerlandje) Jacco Gardner hebben zich door de sixties laten inspireren.
De naam Unknown Mortal Orchestra doet misschien denken aan een obscure trashmetalband, maar deze heren maken een met vlagen aanstekelijke mix van psychedelica, pop en rock met een vleugje funk en soul. De eerste single, Swim and Sleep (like a Shark), doet denken aan the Shins en Grizzly Bear en is een prima medicijn tegen winter-blues. Dit tweede album van UMO intrigeert: op het eerste gehoor is het een bij elkaar geraapt ‘zooitje’, maar juist de chaos zorgt er voor dat je blíjft luisteren.
Hoogtepunten: Swim and Sleep, The Opposite of Afternoon, Faded in the Morning, So Good At Being in Trouble.
De Nederlander Jacco Gardner tapt uit een ander vaatje: deze jongeman heeft goed geluisterd naar onder andere de oude Pink Floyd (inclusief Syd Barrett’s solowerk), Beach Boys en Zombies. Al na de release van single Clear the Air werd hij opgepikt door o.a. Pitchfork en dat heeft geresulteerd in een soort van hype. Cabinet of Curiosities is een prima plaatje geworden: Jacco heeft geen steenkolen- Engels accent (wat voor mij de grootste reden is het gros van de NL releases links te laten liggen) en de productie is om je vingers bij af te likken. De liedjes zijn fraai vorm gegeven, maar het blijft wel wat braaf. Nergens springt Gardner uit de bocht of doet hij iets heel geks, iets wat zijn held Barrett wel (overmatig) deed. Nu is het natuurlijk niet de bedoeling dat Jacco naar de LSD en andere substanties grijpt, maar iets meer eigen smoel zou niet verkeerd zijn. Hoe dan ook, dit is een geweldig debuut waarmee Jacco Gardner zijn visitekaartje afgeeft als muzikant en producer.
Hoogtepunten: Clear the Air, Chameleon, The One Eyed King en The Ballad of Little Jane.
Foxygen heeft met We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic een album gemaakt dat jaren 60 ademt: de luisteraar kan er een spelletje van maken welke invloeden er allemaal zijn geweest. De openingstrack is een hommage aan Sgt Pepper van de Beatles, om te vervolgen met odes aan Bob Dylan, the Kinks en the Rolling Stones. De invloeden liggen er dik bovenop. Foxygen heeft een soort van verzamelalbum gemaakt met liedjes die zo uit de jaren 60 kunnen komen, er komen allerlei stijlen voorbij. Het overtreft de originelen niet, maar het is een leuk plaatje geworden. Kortom: omarm je innerlijke hippie, gooi 40 minuten lang je haar los en dans met bloemen in je haar.
Hoogtepunten: No Destruction, San Francisco, Shuggie, Oh Yeah.
